About this class

This course is hands-on. Delegates build and configure wireless networks, learn how to secure them and test them for vulnerabilities, adopting the mindset of an attacker.

Open group discussion is strongly encouraged. Each delegate has his/her own workstation and appropriate wireless hardware.

WIRELESS NETWORK SECURITY

INTRODUCTION

  • A background into wireless networks and the security issues associated with a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
  • Overview of wireless technologies (e.g. Bluetooth, WiFi, WiMax)

HARDWARE

  • Identification of wireless hardware components and their functionality
  • 802.11 architecture and commonly used terminology

SOFTWARE

  • Configuration of an "ad-hoc" WLAN
  • Installing a wireless Access Point (AP)
  • Configuration of an "infrastructure" WLAN

TESTING FOR WIRELESS VULNERABILITIES

  • Hands-on experience of a default wireless network configuration
  • An overview of "war driving" and Wifi security auditing
  • Practical demonstration of the equipment/tools used to gain access

SECURING WIRELESS NETWORKS

  • How wireless networks can be protected against attack, including WEP, WPA & WPA2 encryption
  • 802.11i and how the standard relates to TSN, RSN and WPA/WPA2
  • Explanation of 802.1x including EAP authentication methods and key management

TESTING THE LEVEL OF SECURITY

  • Once applied, hands-on testing of the degree of security offered from the perspective of the hacker
  • Applying and breaking WEP encryption
  • Applying and breaking WPA encryption
