About this class

This course is for individuals involved in the day to day running and support of a DB2 for z/OS sub-system, as well as those responsible for recovery of DB2 objects and data. It will also be of use to the new database administrator.

This course covers DB2 for z/OS up to DB2 9 and provides attendees with a comprehensive introduction to the day-to-day operations of a DB2 system. It also covers the provided DB2 utilities and service aids, and discusses their involvement in recovery and other scenarios. Normal start-up, operation, and shut-down of the DB2 system is covered. In addition, the need for deferred and conditional restarts is discussed, as are the methods of setting these up. Evaluating additional work that may be required resulting from the use of these methods following an abnormal termination is also discussed. The diagnosis and resolution of other problems that may occur are discussed, such as out of sync. log files, out of space data sets, and read / write errors on recovery data sets.

• An understanding of the major DB2 components.
• An understanding of the DB2 utilities and service aids and their use.
• The actions taken during normal start-up, operation, and shutdown of the DB2 system.
• The actions taken during start-up following an abnormal termination.
• The need for deferred restart, and the effect it will have on the DB2 system and data.
• The need for conditional restart and the effect it will have.
• How to set up a deferred or conditional restart.
• How to determine the effect conditional restart is likely to have upon data integrity.
• How to analyse any outstanding work following a conditional or deferred restart, and the actions required to complete it.
• How to interpret some common error messages, and decide upon the actions required.

What prerequisites are required

While in-depth knowledge of DB2 is not required, a basic understanding of relational databases is assumed. Familiarity with TSO/ISPF is also required.
