About this class

This workshop will assist students in understanding, planning, preparing for, and performing partition migration on IBM System p servers running AIX. Interactive, live demonstrations will reinforce the lecture and give the students the ability to experience the interfaces used to exploit the new features. Students will obtain the knowledge required to carry out a Partition Migration operation.

This workshop is the second in a series of two 1-day workshops, for more information on the first workshop visit ANW01GB .

Who will the lesson benefit?

The target audience for this workshop is experienced System p and AIX administrators, Technical Support personnel, systems architects and systems engineers.

What prerequisites are required

Students are expected to have AIX V5 system administration skills. The list of required knowledge includes (but is not limited to) the following topics:

  • Creating and administering users and groups
  • Installing and maintaining software
  • Configuring TCP/IP and network adapters
  • Creating and administering file systems, including NFS
  • System backup and restore
  • Objectives

  • Describe the difference between inactive and active operation
  • Describe the ways in which Partition Migration can be combined with existing IBM System p features and software to provide better and more flexible service
  • Describe the function of the Workload Partitions Manager software
  • List the components involved in Live and Inactive Partition Migration and their respective roles
  • Describe the compatibility, capability and readiness of partitions and systems to participate in Partition Migration
  • Describe the preparatory steps required for a logical partition to be migrated from one system to another
  • Explain how to start and stop Partition Migration
