About this class

This course shows how to implement DFHSM (HSM) so as to improve overall storage performance, availability and reliability in both DFSMS and non-DFSMS installations. Both DFHSM and DFSMShsm are included in the course. It also includes ABARS which is becoming increasingly important in the disaster recovery arena

Who will the lesson benefit?

Storage Administrators and Systems Programmers. People involved with disaster recovery plans which use HSM will also find the course useful.

What delegates will learn

On completion of this course, attendees will have a thorough knowledge to be able to plan, implement and control an HSM installation and be able to use the ABARS feature in the installation's disaster backup/recovery plans.

  • How DFSMShsm fits into the OS/390 system
  • how HSM utilises the hierarchical storage media to make best use of the online DASD resource.!

What prerequisites are required

An understanding of storage management and DASD concepts is necessary, this may be obtained from the course 'DASD Management'.

Contents of this class

  • HSM and storage administration: Using HSM design objectives to meet the needs of the installation, covering space management, backup processing and dump processing
  • HSM commands and parameters:
  • HSM implementation: Using the starter set
  • Volume management and storage pooling: Creating storage pools, and recommendations on the use of storage pools; volume recovery implications for primary, ML1 and ML2 volumes; the set-up and use of small data set packing
  • HSM control data sets: Structure of the CDSs; use of the FIXCDS to report and correct CDS errors
  • HSM and DFSMS: Differences in processing in a DFSMS environment
